This classification is applicable to colorectal tumors closely observed without magnification.
It classifies colorectal tumors into:
types 1:
Color: Same or lighter than background
Vascular pattern: None, or isolated lacy vessels may be present coursing across the lesionSurface Pattern: Dark or white spots of uniform size, or homogenous absence of pattern
e.g hyperplastic polyps.
types 2:
Color: Browner relative to background (verify color arises from vessels)
Vascular pattern: Thick brown vessels surrounding white structures
Surface Pattern: Oval, tubular or branched white structures surrounded by brown vessels
is observed in various histopathological types such as adenoma, intramucosal cancer, and less invasive submucosal cancer.
types 3:
Color: Brown to dark brown relative to background; sometimes patchy whiter areas
Vascular pattern: Has area(s) with markedly distorted or missing vessels
Surface Pattern: Areas of distortion or absence of pattern
massively invasive submucosal cancer.
