Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC)

Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) are the pacemaker cells in the intestine.
They are mesenchymal cells located in the mesentric pluxes, the muscularis properia and the submucosa throughout the small intestine and colon.
They have special properties that make them unique in their ability to generate and propagate slow waves in gastrointestinal muscles.
They regulate intestinal motility through generation of slow waves and determine the frequency of contraction.
They amplify neuronal signals, mediate neurotransmission from enteric motor neurons to smooth muscles cells, and set the smooth muscles membranes potential gradient.

Gastric myoelectrical slow wave activity produced by pacemaker cells (ICC) can be reflected by electrogastrography (EGG).

Which of the following statements regarding interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC) is false?
  A.   They originate from c-kit–positive mesenchymal cells.
  B.   Myenteric ICC are responsible for spontaneous generation of slow waves.
  C.   Intramuscular ICC facilitate propagation of slow waves in the stomach.
  D.   Intramuscular ICC in the cardia have a role in mechanoreception.
  E.   Loss of ICC in the antrum is associated with gastroparesis.

6 comments:

  1. correct answer D
    myentric ICC generate slow waves
    inramuscular ICC propagate slow waves
intrmuscular ICC in the funds play a role in mechanoreception.
Loss of ICC in the antrum is associated with gastroparesis in patient with DM

  2. Hyperglycemia is associated with all of the following except:
    A. Antral hypermotility
    B. Isolated pyloric contractions
    C. Gastric dysrhythmias
    D. Impaired action of prokinetic drugs
    A
Hyperglycemia is associated with loss of ICC, antral hypomotility, isolated pyloric contractions, gastric dysrhythmias, and impaired prokinetic action of drugs like erythromycin.

  3. the smooth muscles within each muscle layer of the samll intestine form a synctium. Their activity is locally coordinated by which of the following:
    1-ICC
    2-Enteric nervous system
    3-intrinsic neurons
    4-myentric plexus
    5-extrisic neurons

  4. with regard to the ICCs, which of the following is accurate?
1-the distribution of these cells changes from infancy to adulthood
2-These cells are present only in the small intestine
3-They regulate intestinal motility by generating slow waves and the frequency of contraction
4-Their number is regulated by dopamine

  5. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
